About Bearwaller Gap

The Bearwaller Gap is one of the most rewarding hikes in Middle Tennessee. It passes numerous natural features, rock gardens, overlooks, wet-weather waterfalls and wildflowers in season. It’s physically challenging, traversing many ups and downs along the shoreline of Cordell Hull Lake. We will be doing a there and back starting at Defeated Creek Recreation Area hiking 5.6 miles to Tater Knob overlook and then back the same way 5.6 miles to Defeated Creek. The hike is strenuous with many ups and downs requiring sturdy hiking boots. Also bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch.

This is a great hike with great views at overlooks and on the trail itself. Wear HIGH ankle boots, a lot of the trail is at an angle besides being up & down. You can park a vehicle at Tater Knob just in case 1 or more cannot complete the out & back. Very confusing for the first 1/2 mile or so. Not marked well at all. Stay left at the beginning is what I remember.
