Savage Gulf State Natural Area Backpacking Trip

Details

When

january 26 to January 27

Join us to Savage Gulf Natural area for an overnight backpacking trip. Mileage: Approximately 12 miles roundtrip

Rating: Moderate to difficult due to the 800ft elevation change both down and up for Saturday’s portion of the hike.

Savage Gulf State Natural Area is situated in the South Cumberland Mountains of central Tennessee. Carved like a giant crow foot into the western edge of the plateau, it is one of Tennessee’s most scenic outdoor recreation areas. At a length of 5miles each, the Big Creek, Collins River and Savage Creeks tumble down over 800 feet in elevation through narrow sandstone gorges, locally known as “Gulfs.”

Starting at the Stone Door Ranger station, we will proceed 1 mile along the rim of the canyon to the Great Stone Door, a crack 10ft wide and 100ft deep. Spectacular views can be scene from the bluff overlooks along the way. Here, we will descend into the gorge and pick up the rugged Big Creek Gulf trail for 4miles. Midway there is Rangers Falls, a ½ mile side excursion, which might be a good spot to have lunch. The trail ends with a steep, challenging climb out of the gorge and short trek to Alum Gap camp area.

The next morning, we can take a day hike to Greeter Falls (3 miles roundtrip) before heading back via Big Creek Rim Trail, 3.2miles away from the parking lot.

Logistics:

Meet on Saturday morning at 7:30 am CST at the Target off Bell Road. We will take interstate 24 to Monteagle exit 127. Take TN 50 to TN 56, through Altamont to Beersheba Springs to reach Stone Door Ranger Station. We must register for permits. The plan will is to be hiking on the trail by 11:00 am CST. We will arrange for car pools before and at the parking lot at Kroger’s for the trip to Savage Gulf. Pack a snack to enjoy on the way to the park, as we will have limited time for stops.
