We will hike 3 days (36 miles) on the Appalachian Trail from Hot Springs, NC to Davenport Gap, TN. This AT hike is for people with backpacking experience who can take Friday off work and are capable of hiking three 12 mile days in the mountains. We will leave on Thanksgiving afternoon/evening and drive to Hot Springs, North Carolina. We will stay in a hostel on Thursday evening, departing on foot through town to join the Appalachain Trail.
Our hike will begin in the trail town of Hot Springs. Our hike will take us over Bluff Mountain, Max Patch summit and Snowbird Mountain. Max Patch is a grassy bald with an outstanding 360 degree panoramic view. From Snowbird Mountain there are excellent views of the Smoky Mountains. Our hike will end at Davenport Gap which is on the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This hike is very scenic, especially with the fall colors, but has some challenging climbs and descents. You should bring a tent or hammock but using the AT shelters is a possibility.
Logistics
The plan is to drive to Hot Springs, NC on Thursday night (11/27/2008). Hot Springs, population 600, is a classic trail town. The Appalachian Trail goes though the center of town. The town has an outfitter, several restaurants and welcomes hikers. If you arrive early you can enjoy a dip in the natural hot springs which are piped to outdoor tubs. We will be either staying at an hostel, campground, or cabin depending on how many are going, interested, etc. on Thursday evening. Our hike will begin Friday morning and end on Sunday afternoon (11/30/2008). Shuttling and carpool arrangements will be determined later by the participants.
