Beginner Backpack Trip to Big South Fork

Details

When

Saturday June 7th-8th 2008

Calling all hikers! This is your chance to break into the wonderful world of overnight hiking, aka backpacking! Join Team Green on this exciting beginner backpack trip to the Big South Fork! This trip is aimed at those who have never tried backpacking before, but experienced backpackers are welcome also. And REI is offering a Team G discount 15% off their normal rental rate for the month of June so you can rent your own tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad for cheap.

About the Trip

Prior hiking experience is recommended, as we will be hiking 5-7 miles per day with anywhere from 20-40 lbs in your pack. We will hike the Falls Branch trail, which follows the river to the Angel Falls overlook, where we will continue along the ridgeline on the Grand Gap Loop. This trail offers mountain vistas and beautiful scenery of the twisting and turning Cumberland River far below. We will drive to Big South Fork Saturday morning and start our 12 mile hike, camping about ½ way. Sunday, we will hike 5-6 miles back to the car and drive back to Nashville. We will do a gear check before we head out on the trail, so make sure you bring everything you need with you!

Level: All levels welcome

Total Miles: 12.4

Prerequisite: -“REI Beginner Backpack Clinic” – May 28th -Prior Hiking Experience -Prior Camping Experience (highly recommended)

Pre-Trip Preparedness/Gear

To sign up for the trip, you must attend the REI Beginner Backpack Clinic on May 28th. This clinic will get you geared up with everything you’ll need for the trip, and save you all the stuff you didn’t. We’ll cover the different backpacks/sizing (if you need a backpack), how to properly pack it & distribute the weight, and thinking lightweight when gearing up. We’ll cover foodstuffs, essential gear, sleeping bags/pads, and so much more. This is a crash course on backpacking which will definitely assure that your first trip into the wild is a comfortable and exciting one!

Registration

This trip is limited to 15 people and there is a $2 per person back country permit fee.
To sign up for this trip, please email the trip leader Shana Culberson or Mike Provo.

Where do we meet?

We will meet at the back of the Kroger parking lot in Hermitage off I-40 at 6am Saturday morning. If anyone wants to carpool, you can make arrangements at that time (please bring some cash to help out the person driving if you plan to ride w/ someone else).

If you have any questions or cannot make the clinic, please contact Shana Culberson to discuss options. Also, if you do not plan to meet at the carpool location, please contact me so I can send you directions and exchange phone #s to make sure we don’t miss each other at the trailhead.

Would anyone mind if I used their stove while we are camping to boil water for a freeze-dried meal? The stove I inherited from my father is not working. I’d be happy to help carry the load of stove/fuel canister during the hike in.
    Thanks!

    Ride request:
I live beside Belmont across from Bongo Java. Would someone be willing to pick me up on Saturday morning?
